Cannabutter: The Most Potent Recipe

infused cannabis butter

Any dish you can make with regular butter, can be infused with cannabis using cannabutter.

Impress your friends and loved ones with an infused cannabis dinner! (It’s up to you whether you choose to make psychoactive THC butter or non-psychoactive CBD butter.)

People often associate cannabutter with making edibles, however you can add this to any dish you want.

Furthermore, making your own cannabutter is an excellent skill to make your very own infused food and edibles.

Add some butter to your toast in the morning, or in those muffins you’ve been meaning to make.

Let’s get into it!

Cannabutter: Why Potency Matters

A lot of the cannabutter recipes out there produce lower to moderate-strength butter.

Many people prefer a weaker cannabutter for their ability to relax or enjoy a delicious edible that helps take some of the edge off. However, making sure your butter is potent will allow you to use less of it at a time thus making your butter last longer.

Furthermore, cannabutter can’t have an increased potency once it’s been made.

Those with a high tolerance will probably need a stronger, more potent edible.

Cannabutter: What You Need To Make Potent Cannabis Butter

Listed below are the essential ingredients for making a strong cannabutter recipe:

  • Cannabis flower or trim (plant material).
  • High-quality salted and melted butter
  • Water
  • Cookie sheet
  • Medium saucepan
  • Stirring spoon
  • Cheese cloth or strainer

Access to cannabis trim was previously not easy unless you had a license to grow. However, nowadays, some dispensaries will sell packaged trim or shake for a lower price than dried flowers.

A hand grinder can be used to grind dried flowers if there isn’t enough trim. However, if you are using bud, this recipe requires less than it does for trim.

The cookie sheet will be used to decarboxylate the cannabis trim.

Beware that this process is quite pungent and your house will smell strongly of cannabis for a few hours.

Some prefer to use slow cookers or crock pots to make cannabutter. This helps to keep the house smelling fresh, but it has adverse effects on the recipe’s potency.

The preferred method is to simmer cannabis, butter and water in a pan for about 4 hours. However using a crockpot is a good option too because you don’t have to keep a close eye on it. If you live somewhere where the strong smell could be a problem, it would probably be better off to go with the slow cooker/crock pot option.

Cannabutter: Decarboxylating Cannabis

  1. Make sure to crush your cannabis as fine as possible, using a food processor can help with this if you have one.
  2. Place onto a cookie sheet
  3. Preheat your oven to 260 degrees
  4. Put the cookie sheets with the cannabis on them in the oven for 45 minutes

To activate certain cannabinoids within cannabis, decarboxylation must be done.

This is to ensure that the maximum effect of cannabis is obtained.

There are many opinions on the best temperature and time to decarb cannabis, just like in any other area of the cannabis industry.

Most people will only say the low 200s for 60-75 minutes or so. Although Amber Senter, who is considered a top marijuana edible authority figure in America, had recommended trying 260 degrees for 45 minutes.

Cannabutter: Combining All The Ingredients

  1. Fill the pot 1/4 to 1/3-full of cannabis trim
  2. To make sure the pot is about 80% full, you will need to add 1 cup of butter per 4 cups of water.
  3. Turn the burner on high to bring the mixture to a boil.
  4. Let the mixture boil in a saucepan for four hours. Stirring occasionally
  5. Add water as required because it evaporates and lowers the level in your pot

Water will help protect the butter and cannabis material from scorching.

If you’re using the stovetop method, make sure to check the boiling mixture every 15-30 minutes to determine if water needs to be added or if it needs to be mixed.

You can boil it for four hours or more if you wish, but for strong cannabutter, four hours is enough.

Straining the Mixture After Simmering

After you have let the mixture simmer for a few hours, the next step in the process is to separate solids and liquids.

The liquid butter from the super-hot cannabis mix must be separated.

Allow some time for the mixture to cool.

Alternatively, you can just start squeezing the cannabis mix with your fingers (after washing them of course) to separate the butter from the mixture.

However, it’s more efficient (and cleaner) to use a strainer or cheescloth.

Letting The Butter Cool And Storage

When you’re done straining and pressing the mixture, the cannabis liquid should have separated with the water at the bottom and oil at the top.

Allow the container to cool down for 30 to 45 minutes, and then place it in the refrigerator overnight.

There you have it, the most potent cannabutter!

You can dispose of any excess water. The bottom side of the  cannabutter should be scraped off.

If you do not plan on using it for a while, then place it in the freezer until you’re ready for usage. When stored properly, cannabutter can last for up to 6 months in the freezer.

Remember this recipe will make an extra-strong cannabutter, so if you need to, you can mix the cannabutter with regular butter to lower the potency.

For a healthier option, opt for an unsalted butter.
