It was once widely believed that tobacco companies would flood the market with smokable offerings as soon as marijuana became legal.

This didn’t happen. Instead, the beverage industry is taking the lead in marketing and commercializing weed-based products.

Some of the most prominent names in the industry are developing and introducing THC-infused beverages, such as Pabst Blue Ribbon, Bud manufacturer Anheuser-Busch, and Constellation. For reference, Constellation is the maker of Corona beer.

Weed Drinks: The Future of Cannabis

CNBC reports, “new emulsion technology has made it possible to mix THC into an array of beverages. Now, drink makers are betting that people who don’t want to smoke or vape marijuana or drink alcohol because of health or social reasons can find an alternative in cannabis beverages.”

It seems obvious in hindsight. Smoking is stigmatized. However, drinking is a social custom that has been around for a while.

It is also well-known that drinking and getting high are connected. It’s only a small step to go from selling wine or beer to selling weed-based beverages.

For example, Pabst is selling “High Seltzers” which are non-alcoholic cannabis drinks with 10mg of THC. According to Pabst, this is “the right amount to have a good time.”

High Seltzers come in many fruity flavors and are available online as well as through dispensaries that sell medical or recreational pot.

This is not to suggest that I advocate the consumption of these products. I also don’t encourage anyone to smoke or consume alcohol.

However, times are changing quickly, and the cannabis industry is growing. Not to mention all the harm that has been caused by the war on drugs. Changes need to be made, and there are bigger fish to fry than the further criminalization of a plant.

The private sector is proclaiming that this is the way of the future. Next, the public sector needs to get on board.
