Cannabis Prices and Measurements

No matter whether you are a beginner or seasoned cannabis consumer, it can be difficult to understand the differences between cannabis weights and prices.

If you are a newbie, the different terms used to refer to cannabis might be overwhelming…

Cannabis prices are determined by weight according to the metric system. That being said, theres usually a legal limit to the amount you can buy in a dispensary. The legal limit is measured in grams, when it starts to get into ounces in pounds it enters the wholesale arena. Let’s take a look at the various quantities you can purchase, and leave the quarter-pounds for wholesalers, distributors, and retailers.

Cannabis Prices and Measurements: A Single Gram

One gram is the minimum amount of cannabis that one can buy at once from a dispensary. It is usually enough to make a fairly decent sized, healthy joint.

A gram can be good for two half-gram joints, which are lighter and more suitable for solo smoking sessions. It’s sufficient enough to fill about two to three regular-sized bowls. A gram of cannabis, or a “dime bag”, can cost between $10 to $20 depending on where you live and the overall quality of the cannabis.

Needless to say, it is essential to know your cannabis prices and measurements before you enter a dispensary.

Cannabis Prices and Measurements: One Eighth

One eighth of an ounce of cannabis is usually just referred to as “an eighth”. It is the  most common amount purchased by consumers.

An eighth is equivalent to 3.5 grams. You can get anywhere from 3-6 joints per eighth depending on how fat you like your joints to be. An eighth of cannabis costs $20-$65 on average, depending on how high quality your cannabis is. The majority of cannabis consumers will buy an eighth or larger quantity to save money in the long run. You save money and get more bang for your buck if you buy larger quantities. Also you won’t have to re-up as often.

Cannabis Prices and Measurements: Quarter-Ounce

A quarter of an ounce, or seven grams of cannabis, is the next level up from an eighth. This amount of cannabis is enough for making around 5-7 blunts or a high number of joints. A quarter ounce is equivalent to 7 grams.

The cost of a quarter will vary depending on where you live and the quality of your cannabis, but it should be anywhere from $60-$85. A quarter ounce is a sufficient amount to get you through a couple weeks or so. It really depends on how often you smoke.

Cannabis Prices and Measurements: Half-Ounce

One-half ounce of cannabis, also called a “half” (or “half-O”), weighs in around 14 grams.

A half-ounce allows you to make 7-14 blunts, or 28 joints depending on what your preferences are. This amount can cost anywhere from $100 to $160. When you buy this much cannabis, most dispensaries/delivery services offer reasonable, discounted prices.

With this amount, you can make your own infused cannabis oil or cannabutter.

A Full Ounce

In most legal states, the most you can buy is one ounce of cannabis at a given time. At 28 grams, you can either roll a whole bunch of blunts or smoke at least double that in joints.

An ounce of cannabis can range in price from $160 to $350. This will depend on the quality of the strain. However, like with most bulk amounts of cannabis being sold, you might be able to get a discounted price by purchasing the large quantities.

What You Can Expect From Your First Dispensary Visit

Understanding the different terms for cannabis amounts and weights can be a great place to start your budding weed enthusiasm. But it can still feel intimidating to walk up to a dispensary with no idea what you might find. With dispensaries in legal recreational states becoming more open to the public, now more than ever, there are a few important tips to brush up on.

Cannabis Dispensary Tips To Keep In Mind

  • You should bring your photo ID and any medical cards (if required). If legal recreational cannabis is available in your state, you don’t have to present a medical card. But it can help you save money on taxes. Although states that only allow for medical cannabis consumption will not permit you into the dispensary without one. It is also important that you have your driver’s license or ID card. Without either or, you could be denied entry.
  • Most dispensaries have a limit on the number of people that can enter at the same time. It is not entirely uncommon for there to be restrictions on how many people may be present at a time in the product area. It is possible that you will be asked to wait until other customers have purchased their product.
  • You can find great deals at many dispensaries or delivery services if you keep your eyes peeled. Another way to shop for cannabis in a financially-conscious sense is to ask your budtender if they have any “shake.”
  • Shake is the small pieces of cannabis that fall off the plant when it is being harvested or grounded. People will usually only pay for high quality, fully formed nugs, so shake is considered inferior and often will be sold at a very low price. This is a great option for anyone who is budget-conscious or wants cannabis material to make edibles with.
  • Know your limit. The total amount of what you want to buy will be depending on the regulations within your area. To be ready for when your budtender cuts you off, make sure you know your state’s regulated limit.
