In November, several states will vote on whether or not to legalize adult recreational marijuana use. Nearly half of all states will allow legal recreational marijuana use if all the initiatives are passed.
Ballot initiatives that would establish legal markets to sell recreational marijuana have been approved (or are awaiting final approval) in Arkansas, Missouri, Maryland, Oklahoma, and North Dakota.
South Dakota voters face a ballot proposal that would legalize personal possession of marijuana and home cultivation but wouldn’t create a regulated commercial market, similar to Washington, D.C.
Additionally, in Nebraska, a medical marijuana initiative stands a good chance of getting on the ballot.
Because most states have legalized medicinal cannabis, the ballot referendum efforts for this year focused on recreational marijuana.
At the moment, marijuana is legal in 19 states and the District for adult recreational use.
The ballot initiatives have a high chance of passing due to growing public support for legalization. According to a Gallup poll, more than two-thirds of Americans (68%) support legalizing marijuana. This is a significant increase from the 48% recorded ten years ago.

Cannabis legislation has a history of being difficult to pass and faces many hurdles. However, it is not certain that all of the initiatives will be made law immediately. Legal challenges could slow down or stop their rollout.
Legalizing marijuana for recreational use has become a bipartisan issue. Additionally, it is a lucrative investment opportunity.
While Democrats tend to support legalization at higher rates than Republican voters in general, most of this year’s ballot initiatives are in states, with Republicans controlling the state legislature and governor’s mansion.

Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer (D.NY) has presented such a bill to the Senate. But it has zero chance for passage. Furthermore, President Joe Biden has stated that he does not support legalization.
