History of the Cannabis Cultivar "Durban Poison"

The Durban Poison story goes back to the late ’70s in South Africa, where a young Ed Rosenthal was in search of new genetics. The variety he found was one of the earliest finishing plants in the area (known for his equatorial Sativas), and he took home a variety of seeds from this local gene pool. When the seed began in the US, there was a fairly wide variety of expressions and flowering times. That’s why Ed began selecting his favorites and inbred the line to highlight those qualities.

Ed passed some of his work from the Durban line to his friend Mel Frank for additional work, which focused mainly on shortening the flowering time. Mel worked with several generations of plants, again and again choosing the most resinous but fastest plants and crossing them among themselves. The resulting line produced two phenotypes of choice, which Mel nicknamed A and B, with A being his favorite of the two.

This is where Sam the Skunkman and Amsterdam enter this saga: Sam received the gift of Mel Frank’s B line and took the seeds (along with the line that would become the Dutch Skunk # 1) to Amsterdam for his first foray in the Dutch Seeds Business. Skunkman worked the line even further, concentrating again on reducing the flowering time so that Durban could end up abroad in the short Dutch summer, which ended up being the main selling point of the strain in its early days. The seed lines were originally launched by The Seed Bank (the precursor of Sensi Seeds) in the 1985 catalog, and from there they rose to fame worldwide, especially among outdoor growers.

Durban has a very special sweet smell and flavor which perfumes the air when smoked and leaves a sweet aftertaste in the mouth. The buds are round and thick, and modern phenotypes that are more common also have a thick layer of large head and short stem trichomes that cover almost all surfaces. For this reason, it is a wonderful strain for water hash: – Many heads and a small shaft of Tric and the content of cystolith makes the high-quality extracts completely melted.

Durban is legendary for its almost electric effects package that fills the user with buzzing energy and a lot of mental activity. It’s the perfect chance for a productive day as it’s strong, but most times it eludes the most mental processes and allows a high level of functionality. But it would be a burden to spend a Durban full day doing nothing but working since it is the kind of effect that makes the user want to go out and have fun. It increases sociability and is a perfect companion to a long conversation, a hike, or even a solo session with something like a good book or video game. Most users find themselves walking or standing and sitting repeatedly because it comes with such a high dose of energy.

Some strain in cannabis history have the amount of work and history behind them like the Durban Poison, and it shows in its lasting qualities. Patients looking for a true Sativa experience are asking for Durban throughout the country. In Colorado, it has been and continues to be one of the most requested strains on dispensary shelves, which makes it an almost indispensable part of a store’s repertoire of strains. For growers, their easy and quick flowering nature combined with their above-average yield and resin content levels make it an easy option to have in the garden.

It has also shown great potential to be crossed with other varieties and has found it to be a strain of award-winning hybrids around the world.

Appearance, Taste, and Aroma of Durban Poison Marijuana Strain

Aroma / Aromatics

When opening a bag of this pungent sativa, prepare for the aroma to transport you to exotic lands in the east with a spicy and earthy blend reminiscent of a strong chai tea. Anise, vanilla, spiced orange and fennel. Behind the sweet spice lies an earthy tone, think of dark forests and rich pine trees. Finishing it is a delicious lemon citrus note, which offers a global and interesting nose. The smoke that fills the air after taking a toke leans heavily on the licorice and anise end of the spectrum, leaving a nice incense in the air.

Flavor / Taste

As the nose of Durban Poison, the flavors are equally pleasant and complex. This strain hits your palate with an earthy flavor in the first place. Rich fennel and vanilla backed by a touch of cloves. Robust pine notes like a freshly cut Christmas tree follow before the spicy orange comes to play again, dancing on your palate. The lemon is also there, but instead of the fresh essence of lemon peel that is obtained in the nose, the palate is more reminiscent of sweet lemon candy.

THC Composition

Let’s dive deep into what’s really important, THC composition. Lab tests on Durban Poison show this tasty nugget at around 17% on the lower end of the spectrum and a whole whopping 26% on the higher end of the scale! Your average buds will probably be somewhere in the middle, but either way, it’s sure to get you going! In addition to THC, Durban Poison has another unique cannabinoid called THCV. This relatively unknown cannabinoid has a variety of useful properties. It has been shown that THCV suppresses appetite, which allows you to resist the temptation to stuff yourself with junk food, regulate blood sugar levels, help with Alzheimer’s disease, increase bone growth and reduce stress. Perhaps this is why this strain is less prone to anxiety than other pure Sativas.

Structure of flowers and buds

Durban Poison is known for its massive and dense bud structure with a long, sharp shape common in Sativa strains. The leaves are a deep and rich green forest with beautiful bright orange pistils that shine through, making this a pretty striking variety. The whole plant is covered in sticky THC-rich trichomes, giving the buds a glistening sheen. Another notable characteristic is the excessively immense resin glands, making this strain a go-to for concentrates and extracts. Bringing it all together is a rich creaminess, filling your mouth and your senses with joy. The finish is long, lingering with you long after you’ve enjoyed a few sweet tokes.

Effects and High

Durban Poison is a Sativa brand that is referred to by some as productive poison or prolific poison. While the high time itself is on the shorter end, it is smooth and allows users to be functional while giving off an instant creative zap. Effects from this strain hit you instantly and give consumers a clear, active head high. Suggested for wake and bake or daytime use, users often replace their coffee morning ritual with this strain.

The high time typically lasts from 2-3 hours and it has a THC content averaging 15% – 25%. Having such a strong THC level makes it valuable in the production of THC concentrates like shatter and wax, and it is generally consumed in this form. Users should keep in mind when this strain is smoked it will give off a thick, lung-expanding smoke.
