How To Clean Your Bong

Bongs are great when it comes to smoking cannabis. Many prefer this method over other methods of smoking like a joint or a blunt.

However, if you own a bong, you need to know how to clean it.

Over time, bongs can get pretty nasty. The whole point of using a bong is how clean and pure the smoke is.

When your bong is dirty, this defeats the purpose of smoking a bong. In fact, there is a risk of acquiring a waterborne or respiratory disease from a dirty bong.

Don’t take the risk. Keep your bong clean.

Not sure how to clean your bong properly and make sure you are getting rid of all contaminants?

You are in the right place!

Let’s get into it…

Here, we go over a simple and easy-to-follow guide for you on how to efficiently and quickly clean your bong.

How To Clean Your Bong: How Dirty is Your Bong?

Dirty water with resin build up is the preferred favorite place for bacteria and pathogens to grow.

You may have seen bacterial film appear on a water surface (e.g. A glass of water that has been left exposed for 24 hours).

This is known as biofilm.

If it can be seen on your bong now, there is a good chance it has also appeared with its microscopic buddies.

You can find a wide variety of microorganisms within biofilm, including yeasts and bacteria. The most unfortunate quality that biofilms have is their ability to form on the surface within a matter of hours.

Once they get enough nutrients and water supply, these microbes can start to make a home in the bong and even your lungs.

After each puff, it can become increasingly difficult for the resins to be cleaned.

Quite fascinatingly, this is due to biofilm being resistant to antibiotics.

It doesn’t just matter how shiny your bong is or how gorgeous it may look.

A contaminated bong can ruin your experience smoking and make it unsatisfying and unhealthy.

It also becomes more likely to potentially contract diseases such as Typhoid and Malaria, the longer it goes uncleaned.

In other words, avoid getting pathogens in your respiratory system and make sure you are cleaning your bong properly.

How To Clean Your Bong: Efficiently Cleaning Your Bong

Cleaning your bong is actually a simpler process than many might think.

It doesn’t require you to purchase any kind of fancy cleaning kit either.

Here are the basics to get the job done: alcohol, salt, pieces of fabric or cotton, and a clean brush.

An easy way to remember what’s needed is remembering the acronym: WSAB, which is defined as W stands for water, S stands as salt, A stands in Alcohol, and B stands for brush — this rule is also meant to help you remember the order in which to use the materials.

How To Clean Your Bong

First: Rinsing Out Your Bong

To get started, dump out the water in your bong.

Then rinse your bong with very hot water.

The same goes for your bowl and down stem as well, and then place the bowl and down stem in a plastic bag.

Second: Adding Cleaning Solution

The next step is to add the alcohol and salt into your bong, along with the bag with the down stem and bowl.

After that, add some hot water to the solution.

Then let the solution mix sit for a while (about 5 minutes or so) to get rid of any stubborn stains before adding the salt.

Third: Cover-Up Openings

To cover the bong’s openings, you can use a towel or some plastic wrap.

The bag with the down stem or bowl should be sealed tightly.

Fourth: Shaking Bong And Plastic Bag

It’s now time to shake it up, literally.

But be careful not to drop or whack it on anything. This allows for the salt to do most of the work for the scrubbing.

Shake for as long as you can.

Final Step: Emptying Out And Re-Rinsing

Dump out the alcohol and salt solution.

Use warm water to clean out any remaining salt.

You can repeat this process if you find any remaining spots.

However, be sure to let the alcohol and salt solution rest for a while (5 minutes at least).

After everything is cleaned, fill it back up with clean water and you can start enjoying smoking your bud again.
